This Quick Turnaround Turns Failure to Success Instantly
December 19, 2011Turnaround Positioning Purpose Turns Failure to Success
The 20 foot table in the conference room was empty and open just like the airfreight warehouse late at night filled with empty rollers at the other end of United Airlines operations base in Los Angeles when the two of us looked at each other across the table five minutes after the scheduled starting time for our monthly ESP Committee meeting. First our hearts sank.
Senior management had started the Employee Sales Program to get employees out on their own time voluntarily selling seats on our airplanes. Our committee had been working pretty well that year and they made me chairman when my sales went beyond $25,000 due mostly to my designing “Friendship One” for aerobatic competition and writing articles in the R/C Modeler Magazines promoting travel to model aircraft gatherings across the country, but we were about to learn a lesson in getting on purpose.
My second meeting as chair looked initially like a failure because there were only two people in the room. We immediately had a purpose, diagnose the problem, brainstorm solutions, and build a plan – build purpose focus.
That we did and two meetings later we had standing room only in that same room. We built a dynamic and powerful Master Mind Alliance boosting sales in the following year from $98,000 total to over $1,000,000. We produced and funded a gala awards banquet to recognize achievements and continue building. The year after that we continued our momentum and were just about to merge with the UAL Speakers Bureau in San Francisco when the phone call came to my desk in reservations from Richard Ferris, then President of United Airlines killing the program. It was a great ride ending abruptly.
How did we do it? We got everyone on the same page on purpose. Members attended meetings both on days off and work days depending on schedule and we determined the problem was lack of management cooperation allowing people to attend. Our plan gave us full cooperation from every department and it was throttle to the floor after that. The enthusiasm was awe inspiring.
PRINCIPLE: Never Say No Again – Use Purposing Power. Simply put purpose means you know the exact target you want to hit – values based desire – and you have complete faith in hitting that target no matter what it takes – belief in your success mechanism – and you have 100% commitment to build your plans and deliver the action to get there – saying “no” to setbacks – with full realization that: Boldness on purpose has genius, power and magic in it. Never say “no” to your dream again.
APPLICATION:
1. Based on true values write a word picture of the purpose and target to hit
2. Clearly assess challenges and causes and outcomes desired all 3
3. Build impeccable plans for focus, activity and enthusiasm
4. Build commitment into your culture on a bold action level
